Imposition of the Ashes

Christians have long observed with devotion the days of Jesus’ passion and resurrection.  From an early time, it was the custom of the church to prepare for Easter with a season of penitence, fasting, and prayer.  This season of forty days is a time to engage in self-examination, to consider the ways in which we have fallen away from a life of faithfulness. During Lent, we are reminded of the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel, and the need we all have to renew our baptismal faith.

We begin our journey to Easter with the sign of ashes.  This ancient sign speaks of our mortality.  They remind us of the frailty and uncertainty of human life, and they mark the penitence of this season.  The ashes are a visible sign of our limitations and our mortality.

There will be two opportunities to worship in the sanctuary on Ash Wednesday, one at 12 noon and one at 7:30 p.m. Each will include the imposition of ashes, which may be received on the forehead or on the back of the hand. This service will also be live streamed at 7:30 pm.

We welcome everyone to participate in one of our Ash Wednesday services.
