Each
member and active non-member of Lewinsville Presbyterian Church is assigned
to one of 17 clusters, or neighborhood groupings, depending on where he
or she lives. Generally 20-30 family units are included in each cluster.
The
clusters located closest to LPC tend to be geographically quite cohesive
while the clusters located further from the church are generally spread
over a larger areas. Persons can determine their cluster assignments by
consulting the LPC directory and noting the number listed in parentheses
under their phone number.
The Cluster System was created to serve several purposes.
- First,
it provides a communication channel, used to inform members of events
that are of immediate concern to the congregation, such as deaths and
births within the LPC family or urgent, unscheduled meetings or notices.
This information is transmitted by email to those members who have requested
this method and by telephone to the others.
- The
Cluster System also provides a means for organizing assistance to persons
with urgent, short-term needs. Members of a cluster often provide meals
to a family in which a serious illness or death has occurred.
- Clusters
are also notified when a baby is born to a cluster family so neighbors
can support the family and welcome the newborn.
- The
clusters also have provided a social grouping. Some clusters gather
regularly for potlucks and picnics to enjoy fellowship with their church
neighbors.
Two
or three members of each cluster serve as Cluster Leaders and a Deacon
is assigned to each group to provide additional support. The names of
these people are listed in the LPC directory. They provide the hubs through
which information flows to each cluster member and they organize the cluster
to provide special support for individuals within their cluster.
Two
members of the congregation serve as overall managers and coordinators
of the system. The church office notifies these persons, who are called
Cluster Coordinators, of any message that needs to be disseminated to
the congregation and the coordinators, in turn, send the email notice
and contact the cluster leaders.
