THE FRIENDS OF THE LEWINSVILLE
AND THE COMBINED FEDERAL CAMPAIGN
FALL 2006

Over the years, The Friends of The Lewinsville has participated in the National Capital Area United Way Campaign. The contributions made through the United Way have assisted us in supporting the residents in The Lewinsville Retirement Residence. Every contribution, large or small, directly benefits our residents in The Lewinsville Retirement Residence. Please take the time to identify whether the organization you work for takes part in the United Way or Combined Federal Campaigns.

Your consideration in designating The Friends of The Lewinsville, Identification #7279, is appreciated. The contributions made today improve the quality of life of our seniors now and in the future.

Option II: Contributing via the United Way. Although The Friends of The Lewinsville is not one of the 832 agencies officially listed by the United Way, you may still designate us in writing on the form provided by United Way, if your employer participates in the United Way Campaign.

From our humble small frame church beginnings in 1846, Lewinsville has sought new ways to reach out to serve the greater Washington community. In 1966, the congregation purchased land adjoining the church property, envisioning a local mission outreach project. Years of prayerful consideration resulted in the construction of the Lewinsville Retirement Residence (LRR) which opened its doors in 1980.

The Lewinsville's 161 apartments house over 165 residents; recently, about 20 percent were over 90 years young. The vast majority receive a rental subsidy from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Section 8 Housing Program, which pays over 60 percent of LRR's $1.6 million annual rent. A separate (mandatory) meal program provides one sit-down meal per day.

Peg Hurney, LRR's Administrator, and Lorraine Redman, Resident Services Coordinator, oversee daily operations. A management contract is maintained with Goodwin House, Inc., a widely recognized and respected provider of care, services, and living environments for seniors.

Volunteer efforts begin with The Friends of the Lewinsville, who manage the available funds to provide meals, transportation, and other services to needy residents. Financial support includes quarterly gifts from the Church in the World Ministry Group, designated United Way and Combined Federal Campaign contributions, and individual pledges and contributions to the Caring Hands Endowment Fund. Contact Peg Hurney for further information about LRR, The Friends, and the Caring Hands Endowment.

In the spring of 2004, LRR completed a $4.5 million building project that included a new four-floor residential facility, with 18 apartment units, offices, space for an eventual clinic facility, and meeting rooms and common areas for use by residents. A new parking lot adds approximately 60 spaces for residents, staff, visiting professionals, and guests. These rental units fall under Fairfax County's Affordable Dwelling Unit program, and thus have rental assistance available to those who are eligible.

All Lewinsville Presbyterian Church members belong to LRR, Inc., an independent-living facility for low-income residents, and annually elect three members of its nine-member Board of Directors, who also serve as The Board of the Friends of The Lewinsville.
