SUPPORTING THE FRIENDS OF THE LEWINSVILLE
THROUGH
THE COMBINED FEDERAL CAMPAIGN
OR
THE UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN
FALL 2008

Over the years, The Friends of The Lewinsville has participated in the Combined Federal Campaign and the National Capital Area United Way Campaign. The contributions made through these campaigns have assisted us in supporting the residents in The Lewinsville Retirement Residence. Every contribution, large or small, directly benefits our residents. Please take the time to identify whether the organization you work for takes part in the United Way or Combined Federal Campaigns.

For the Combined Federal Campaign, please designate The Friends of The Lewinsville, Identification #99114.

For the United Way of the National Capital Area, The Friends of The Lewinsville is not one of the agencies officially listed by the United Way, but you may still designate The Friends of The Lewinsville in writing on the form provided by the United Way, if your employer participates in, or if you individually give to, the United Way campaign.

Your contributions made today improve the quality of life of our seniors in The Lewinsville Retirement Residence now and in the future. Thank you!

From our humble small frame church beginnings in 1846, Lewinsville has sought new ways to reach out to serve the greater Washington community. In 1966, the congregation purchased land adjoining the church property, envisioning a local mission outreach project. Years of prayerful consideration resulted in the construction of the Lewinsville Retirement Residence (LRR) which opened its doors in 1980.

The Lewinsville's 161 apartments house over 165 residents; recently, about 20 percent were over 90 years young. The vast majority receive a rental subsidy from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Section 8 Housing Program, which pays over 60 percent of LRR's $1.9 million annual rent. A separate (mandatory) meal program provides one sit-down meal per day.

Courtney Nuzzo, LRR's Administrator, and Lorraine Redman, Assistant Administrator and Resident Services Coordinator, oversee daily operations. A management contract is maintained with Goodwin House, Inc., a widely recognized and respected provider of care, services, and living environments for seniors.

Volunteer efforts begin with The Friends of The Lewinsville, who manage the available funds to provide meals, transportation, and other services to needy residents. Financial support includes quarterly gifts from the Church in the World Ministry Group, designated United Way and Combined Federal Campaign contributions, and individual pledges and contributions to the Caring Hands Endowment Fund. Contact Courtney Nuzzo for further information about LRR, The Friends, and the Caring Hands Endowment.

In the spring of 2004, LRR completed a $4.5 million building project that included a new four-floor residential facility, with 18 apartment units, offices, space for an eventual clinic facility, and meeting rooms and common areas for use by residents. A new parking lot adds approximately 60 spaces for residents, staff, visiting professionals, and guests. These rental units fall under Fairfax County's Affordable Dwelling Unit program, and thus have rental assistance available to those who are eligible.

All Lewinsville Presbyterian Church members belong to LRR, Inc., an independent-living facility for low-income residents, and annually elect three members of its nine-member Board of Directors, who also serve as The Board of the Friends of The Lewinsville.
