How Wide is God’s Mercy?

Rob Bell’s recent book Love Wins garnered a great deal of attention and engendered considerable controversy among Christians. He provocatively argues that the idea of God condemning non-Christians to eternal punishment is plagued by inconsistencies and is not well-grounded in the Bible.

We will engage in a discussion of such questions as:

  • What is at stake in the debate over universal salvation (Bell’s position) over against salvation of only the faithful (the traditional Christian position)?
  • How does universalism (the idea that everyone is saved) relate to pluralism (the idea that many religions present a valid path to salvation)?
  • If one embraces universalism, is the church then unnecessary? Is there a place for evangelism if one believes in universal salvation?
