Lent Begins on Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2023

During Lent, we are people on a Journey to the Cross.

Our overall theme for this program year at Lewinsville Presbyterian Church is “Journey Into the Heart of God.” As we move more deeply and more consciously into the heart of God, God gives us (1) greater rootedness and solidness for our lives, (2) an increased readiness to relate to the suffering and pain of our own lives and the life of the world, and (3) a deeper kindness towards the world.

Within the comprehensive, “umbrella” theme of “Journey Into the Heart of God,” we have several smaller journeys. During Advent, we were on a “Journey to Bethlehem.” During January, as we explored the letter to the Galatians, we were on a “Journey to Freedom.”

During Lent, we will be on a “Journey to the Cross.”

The cross of Christ reveals to us the deepest and most poignant dimensions of God’s heart. The yearning, suffering love of God’s heart for us is revealed most clearly in Jesus’ death on the cross. God’s love does not coerce or manipulate. It is a love that is patient, steadfast, never-ending, and full of mercy. During the season of Lent, we are invited to ponder Jesus’ death on the cross, and what it means for our lives:

How is Christ’s death on the cross meaningful for us? In what ways does it set us free? What does it teach us? What questions do we have about it? How does the cross challenge us?

It is our joy to offer you this Lenten devotional booklet, organized around the theme of the “Journey to the Cross,” written by participants in the Lewinsville congregation. We invite you to use these readings as part of your daily spiritual practice during Lent.  Our prayer is that they may help you to reflect on the cross and its relationship to your life.

We offer our deep and profound thanks to all who have contributed their time, energy, and love to the production of this booklet – the writers, coordinators, and editors.

We are grateful to all of our devotional authors for their submissions, and we invite you to ponder them as reflections for our Lenten journeys. The thoughts in each devotion represent those of the author and not necessarily Lewinsville Presbyterian Church.

We will not be publishing a booklet format this year.
You may sign up to receive daily devotions via email each morning,

Earth Care Reflection/Action Calendar

In addition to the Lenten Devotional booklet, the Lewinsville Earth Care team is recommending
for our use a daily Lenten Creation Care reflection-action calendar produced by Interfaith
Power & Light (DC./Md./NoVa).

The calendar reminds us “to be more mindful of the ways that our daily habits impact both our common home and all those with whom we share it” entreating us “to answer God’s call to be faithful stewards, speaking out for Creation care.”
