Psalm 91:1-4
You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.”
For he will deliver you from the snare of the hunter
and from the deadly pestilence;
he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and defense.
Devotion
The words to the devotional hymn “On Eagle’s Wings” are based on Psalm 91, which has become popular as a contemplative and thought-provoking hymn – a prayerful and comforting song that conveys the idea that God lifts and strengthens people.
This Psalm is a powerful reminder that even amidst life’s uncertainties and challenges, we can find refuge and protection in God, who is our ultimate shelter and strength. By dwelling in His presence, we can trust that He will watch over us and deliver us from harm, offering peace and security through His unwavering love and care.
When we are tired, afraid, or sad, we all want a place to go where we can find rest and peace. When we feel lonely, we need a shelter and we all need our safe places. We can take refuge in knowing that nothing can separate us from God’s love.
In the busy and crowded lives we lead, let us not forget to make room for God and to try to realize that within all the turmoil in our world today, there is still so much we should be grateful for. Even Anne Frank could write, “Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.”
Prayer
Finally, this Psalm reminds me of a prayer that I have used before, but still refer to often:
I BELIEVE
I believe in the sun even when it is not shining.
I believe in love even though I can’t see it.
I believe in God even when God is silent.
