On October 20th, we revisited the incredible story of Sarah Ann, an enslaved woman who escaped from Northern Virginia to upstate New York in January 1850. Alongside her 7-year-old daughter Mary and heavily pregnant with another child, Sarah Ann hid for 20 days under the false bottom of a produce wagon. Their escape was facilitated by Cyrus and Seth Osborne, members of the Lewinsville Presbyterian Church, who had previously hired Sarah Ann’s labor.
During Lewinsville’s Anniversary Sunday, George Mason University Ph.D. Candidate Annabelle Spencer shared her research on Sarah Ann’s courageous journey to freedom and her connections with the Lewinsville community, both enslaved and free.
